Contact lenses for dry eyes
A relaxed feeling thanks to modern lenses
Many people have dry eyes. Contact lenses can become uncomfortable when one's eyes are dry. Special contact lenses for dry eyes can prevent dehydration and the side effects associated with it – for relaxed and fresh eyes, all day long!
Dry eyes: lenses for special requirements
The air conditioning at the office, exhausting work at the computer, or simply predisposition: dry eyes can be a result of many things. If you regularly have dry eyes, the comfort of conventional contact lenses is often not enough. The reason for this is that contact lenses float on the eyes' natural tear film, which means there is no direct contact with the cornea. When the eyes dry up, however, the tear film can tear. Wearing contact lenses may become uncomfortable as a result and cause your eyes to burn or itch. A solution to this is to wear special contact lenses for dry eyes. Modern materials, an integrated moisturiser and an innovative lens design keep the tear film upright.
The advantages of silicone hydrogel contact lenses for dry eyes
Modern contact lenses made of silicone hydrogel are ideal for dry eyes. They have outstanding breathability and provide the eyes with up to seven times more oxygen than conventional hydrogel contact lenses. They thus offer the greatest wearability. In addition, silicone hydrogel contact lenses contain less water. Lenses with a high water content absorb moisture from the eye like a sponge when the water evaporates. Contact lenses with a low water content do not dry out during the period they are worn. They stay comfortable to wear and do not attack the eyes' tear film. Some contact lenses also contain an integrated wetting agent that can specifically prevent eyes from becoming dry.
Which are the best lenses for dry eyes?
There are a whole range of contact lenses (including daily, weekly or monthly lenses) that are specially designed for, and have special technology to prevent, dry eyes. If you are looking for lenses for extremely dry eyes, it is best to contact your eye doctor or contact lens optician!
Best daily lenses for dry eyes: daily lenses are replaced on a daily basis. This means that impurities, allergens or protein deposits cannot accumulate on them. This is why daily lenses can provide a great deal of comfort for dry eyes. Excellent daily lenses for dry eyes include, for example, the 1-Day Acuvue Moist lenses. The Lacreon technology allows them to work like an active moisture retainer. The Biotrue Oneday lenses have a high moisture content of almost 80 percent, which is similar to that of the cornea. Their unique protection against dehydration keeps the eyes relaxed and fresh for up to 14 hours.
Best monthly lenses for dry eyes: there are also contact lenses that need to be changed monthly which have special protection that stops the eyes from drying out. The Air Optix plus HydraGlyde lenses, for example, use SmartShield technology, which in combination with the HydraGlyde moisture matrix, ensures long-lasting wearability.
Best contact lenses for dry eyes and presbyopia: many people suffer from increasingly dry eyes as they get older, and presbyopia at the same time. The Proclear Multifocal lenses were specially developed for their needs. The PC technology ensures that the lenses are still comfortable to wear even after being in for 12 hours. The Air Optix plus Hydraglyde Multifocal or Biofinity Multifocal lenses are also well-suited for presbyopia and dry eyes. Daily lenses for dry eyes and presbyopia are also available, such as the 1-Day-Acuvue Moist Multifocal lenses.
Best contact lenses for dry eyes and astigmatism: if you have dry eyes and astigmatism, you can use the 1-Day Acuvue Moist for Astigmatism lenses, for example. For those who prefer monthly lenses, the Clariti Toric lenses with their AquaGen technology could be a great choice.
Tips: this helps prevent the eyes from becoming dry
If you suffer from dry eyes, you should ensure you blink regularly and more often close your eyes for a few seconds each day. This stimulates the production of tears and moisturises your eyes naturally. Take more breaks when focussing on work on a computer, and make sure you are drinking enough. The air in the room should not be too dry. Putting a wet towel over the heater can help keep air moist in winter.
