Multifocal contact lenses
Multifocal contact lenses which are also called varifocal, bifocal or progressive contact lenses are manufactured to help people with presbyopia. Presbyopia is experienced through a blurred vision at near distances. This phenomenon usually occurs around the age of 40 to 50 years. It describes a loss of the elasticity of the eye lens which is no longer able to curve sufficiently and thus to fully accommodate between near and far sight.
The solution for this problem is a contact lens with several focuses for different distances. It provides clear vision in short as well as in far distances. Varifocal contact lenses are a great alternative to multifocal glasses. Wearing them, you do not have to worry about changing between your distance- and reading glasses: just open your book or newspaper and start to read.
In contrast to spherical contact lenses without multiple focuses, some multifocal lenses need additional specifications to correct both short and far distances. The “ADD-Value” is the difference between the prescription for far and short distance. Sometimes it can be defined precisely while other lenses have the options “High” and “Low”. Some lenses such as Focus Dailies Progressives have predefined values. You should consult your optician in order to obtain your exact values and find the lens that fits your eyes best.
